Best known as a painter of Western landscapes and Indians in New Mexico, Arizona, & California, Gay Betts was born into an artistic family (several siblings and parents–Edwin and Jane Betts—were artists). 1903–graduated Art Institute of Chicago, which exhibited her art over many decades. Taught art in California and Cuba. Wrote stories and illustrated many books. Depression WPA artist- she painted dioramas in San Diego and murals in San Francisco.
